"Copa's wine list seems to have become more all-encompassing over the years, but it still has a real personality. We especially like the Spanish selections and would be there frequently if it weren't so damn far away from home. The small-plates menu works well with the available wines, too. Favorites include the hummus San Antonio, the tortilla espaƱola, the albondigas ... oh, yes, and the Zeta pizzetta with roasted mushrooms, shallots, garlic, and chevre."

We'll wear the title proudly, and promise you that we won't let it ever get stale and always listen to you and what you want to see in here. Look forward to COPA just getting better and better! We want to keep this title. Go pick up a current today or sometime before next week.

Thanks to all who voted.

You rock!

WINE BAR : Copa Wine Bar

So what does it take to be picked as the best wine bar in San Antonio? "Make wine approachable and make it affordable," says Jeff Bridges, owner of Copa Wine Bar, 19141 Stone Oak Pkwy., this year's winner of the Readers' Choice Award for best wine bar. "Wine is an intimidating thing and we try to make it as unintimidating as possible." "Our belief is that wine should be fun and doesn't have to be so stuffy," says co-owner Angie Bridges. The husband/wife team also attribute their success to listening to their customers' needs and providing them what they want. "We never belittle a customer for what they like," says Jeff. "If they want a white zin, they get it." It also helps to have an extensive wine selection on hand. "We offer more wines by the glass than any other wine bar in the state. There are a whole lot of options available for our customers without them having to commit to a bottle," he says. Affordability is something that also has made the wine bar a happening spot. "The more you spend on a bottle of wine, the more room there is for disappointment if it is not good," Angie says. "I believe in the slow dollar, it is more honest." "Our average bottle is $30. We want to be your everyday, neighborhood wine bar rather than a special-occasion thing," says Jeff. Both Angie and Jeff are excited and honored to be recognized for their hard work. "It gives me confidence that we are doing something right," Jeff says.
